  Cargo, 10th August 2010

I love my live Hip Hop events so when I heard Jay Electronica was doing another show in London, I knew I had to be there as I’d missed the first show.  I’d never been to or even heard of Cargo before but it’s a fairly decent looking venue with a no-frills main room which was where it was all happening.

Semtex was on the ones and twos – who I’d never had the opportunity to see DJ before, but he has given me new inspiration!  To see a man with one arm spinning on the decks and working the crossfader with his mouth – goes to show how determination and passion can lead you to achieving your goals despite any obstacles that may be in your way.  DJ Semtex, I salute you!

Jay Electronica stepped on stage in a Fuck Solaar t-shirt.  What more can be said on that? I think we all pretty much feel the same way but I had no idea there were t-shirts!  He got everyone in the audience to chant fuck solaar, which we did with no hesitation.  Let me get one thing clear about Jay – for all the non-believers (and I have come across a fair few!) He is one of the realest most electrifying artists I’ve had the pleasure to see perform live.  If you like your Hip Hop real, and you are down with the culture, then you need to get down with this man.  His wordplay, delivery and mic control are off the chain and he wants us to understand and hear every word – and just in case we don’t?  He’ll spit it in accapella and make sure that we do!  I did not realise how much love he actually had out there, until he invited the audience to join him on the stage and was promptly swamped by a load of mini Jay Electronicas who knew every word and every adlib to every track that he performed.

One thing about Jay - his love for his fan base is apparent through the quality of the show he puts on, the way he interacts with the audience and his willingness to move amongst the crowd and personally sign autographs, take pictures and spare a minute for some conversation.  It’s great to see an artist that wants to go that extra bit further to make the experience a special and memorable one.  If I get another opportunity to see him perform again, I will go and support him because the energy, the vibe, the love and of course the Hip Hop, is more than worth it!  We salute you Jay!
